Discussion:
Are printer drivers for Canon i9900 & MX860 available without installing the printer?

Today I saw two Canon printers at the thrift store but don't know how to
tell if the printer drivers will be automatically installed and
supported by Windows 10 update if I go back and get one of those two
Canon printers.
Canon i9900
Canon MX860
I'd probably pick the printer with the most available supported drivers.
Without actually installing the printers, how can I tell?
I would first use Google for a search.
And I did just that.
Lots of sites have drivers for both printers, including;

Are the printers second-hand? If so, you need to check the hardware
before available software.
Are they going cheap? Cheap enough to justify paying for discontinued
products? That's a subjective decision.

Why are you pointing the user to those viruses-R-us sites?

Why are you so pre-occupied ? Windows 10 has drivers
for stuff like this. It has an immense pile of drivers.

You can look on "catalog" for evidence.

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=canon-i9900

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=mx860

Someone ditched their i9900 in 2013 "because the inks were hard to find".
Also, replacement printheads are expensive. How expensive would they
be, ten years later ? This doesn't sound like a good deal particularly,
except as a Smithsonian project.

The Pixma 860 is from the year 2009.

https://www.cnet.com/reviews/canon-pixma-mx860-mx860-review/

Some people jettison printers after the teaser carts are empty,
and that might be a better printer to pick up. Especially if
the print head is part of the cart. New carts, cost as much
as a whole printer... which is the whole idea of the business model.

Most people would not even try to sell a teaser printer, because
it's not really worth a dollar to anyone.

The question boils down to "why are you buying material like this?".
Even new, it's not a good deal for small-volume printing. Will
you get your moneys worth from it ? Hard to say. It might be a
false economy.

If you are doing high volume printing, you find one of the
tank-based printers. At least that is designed for printing,
and is not a joke-in-a-box. A laser printer is an alternative.
Modern (polymer) toner does not have an infinite shelf life, which
also matters when "avoiding" the purchase of expired toner.
Even the old toner did not have an infinite shelf life, yet
it seemed to hold up pretty well.

What's the next step after I have the Microsoft "CAB" file format?

administrative Command Prompt.

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:"C:\users\username\downloads\some.cab"

I do not know what to do, when one of the catalog entries has a massive
number of cabs :-) There will always be something in that bloody Catalog
thing, that is a complete mystery. My speed is more the downloading of .msu
which is the self installer. When the .msu won't install, it might mean
a servicing stack update (SSU) is missing on the system. Googling the
KB number perhaps, along with Servicing Stack Update as keywords, may
uncover an article where someone identifies the thing needed.

Since DISM did not always exist on the OS, there is some other recipe
for older OSes and CAB files.
